Healthcare and Technology

Healthcare and Technology

***************************************
Sharing one of the articles I wrote for HealthTech News; enjoy!

Technology is everywhere in the Bay Area.  For many, it is the lifeline to everyday tasks such as meetings, appointment reminders, driving directions and even connecting us with people around the world.  With technology at the forefront what impacts does it have on healthcare and our overall health?  This article will examine the latest in healthcare mobile technology and how it impacts our daily lives.

When we think of scheduling an appointment with our primary care physician also referred to as a PCP; most of us think of going online and scheduling an appointment through an online portal or app on our smartphone.  In fact, according to Accenture's forecast [1], two out of three people will login online to make, cancel or confirm their doctor's appointment.

This method of scheduling a doctor's appointment has been around for over ten years – but only recently saw an increase of online usage when it came to managing one's health.  So what was the turning point:  Accessibility and Convenience.

According to Doctor Now's independent committee group, Nat Rosenthal one of the founding partners explains "Technology has always been there – we are just now catching up.  When we think ten and fifteen years ago and who was using technology it was the twenty and thirty-somethings always on their phones and iPods – well, that population has aged and what they brought with them is their use of technology.  Now in their forties, they are the ones utilizing technology to get things done faster."

If technology has always been around, why the sudden shift in the way we use it when it comes to managing our health?  A study shows, that ten years ago online healthcare was still unknown territory – the diagram below indicates that in 2014 healthcare benefits from employers was nearly 50%~ whereas in 2004 healthcare benefits offered by employers was about 35%.  This change in health benefit offerings impacts the way we use technology to manage our health.  Health benefits offered by employers are typically corporate and for-profit plans that encourage using a website, smartphone app or automated phone services.

For example, Kaiser one of the leading health insurance plans offered by employers is well-tuned to the digital age.  They not only encourage online or phone self-service systems but make it more convenient.  Tiffany, a self-employed healthcare worker is a Kaiser member and recalls how she was introduced to technology as a way to manage her healthcare.  "As a mother of two you have to ensure that the decisions you make are the best ones available.  When it comes to my healthcare I want a plan that is competitive and uses technology not only to help their members make appointments fast and easy online but uses the advances to further medical research.  I have had a PCP with their own practice and their tools and member benefits are not robust like these larger plans."

Mobile technology is more than just making appointments and accessing your health benefits online – it also enables you to be a better you.  How many of us have downloaded a pedometer or calorie counter?  These too, are ways that technology is aligning with our healthcare needs.  Many of these tools such as calorie counters are often recommended by our PCPs.  These mobile apps allow us to stay connected with our health goals and communicate with our doctors.  If one day, after a doctor's visit we were urged to walk more and monitor our daily activity – what tool would allow us to monitor such conditions?  What would our doctors recommend?  If these questions sound familiar then you are not alone.  Today, many people in the United States are asking these questions and discovering ways to stay healthy.

"My doctor suggested the Kaiser app" Tiffany explains, "He suggested it for the entire family not just me.  He emphasized how it is a good way to manage my appointments for myself and the kids.  The app also has a lot of useful tools to promote a healthy lifestyle.  There are healthy eating tips and articles that are family friendly.  I also monitor what I eat with an online journal provided by the app.  In all, the only time I interact with Kaiser is when I check-in for my appointment and see my doctor.  Otherwise, I am completely online and mobile when it comes to managing my family's healthcare and that's perfect for my hectic schedule."

With technology like Fitbit, heart and workout monitors having an intimate relationship with your health is easier and affordable than ever.  Although, this doesn't mean that everyone in the Bay Area uses tech trends to keep an eye on their health.  There are some individuals that are not able to access such apps because of their demographics or economical situations.

"When I think of healthcare I do not think of going online and surfing the web." Carol White, an Oakland, CA resident explains how some of the technical advances the healthcare industry has made doesn't appeal to everyone.  "If I need to make an appointment I call my doctor and if I am in the neighborhood I stop by his office.  Going online is not easy for me; I grew up  in a generation where if you wanted something done you  pick up a phone or drive downtown to speak to someone in person.  Today I see my grandkids on their phones every second of the day.  Everyone is on their phone and interacting with people through barriers; but for me I don't want any barriers when it comes to my health.  If I want to manage my healthcare I do it directly with my doctor and nurses."

Carol represents about 25% of people in a community who believe healthcare management, on all levels should be done directly with your doctor and their office staff.  So the question remains, how effective is technology when introducing it to individuals who are so against it?  Is technology needed on the patient's side to make sure their healthcare is well managed?  It depends on who you ask.  Some would argue that technology makes it easier to get the hard things done.  For instance, you can email your doctor; view lab results and schedule follow up visits.  Whereas the other side to this– technology is creating a barrier for patients who need more interactions with their doctors and that is not healthy for those individuals.

No matter what side you are on when it comes to technology and healthcare – the accessibility is there for those who want it and toll-free numbers are still in existence for those who don't.  The bigger picture is that healthcare has evolved and no matter how you choose to manage it is a personal choice and one that should be made by you and your doctor.

Blog vs. Vlog

Blog vs. Vlog

Starting a blog is relatively easy, it takes some dedication because a blog can easily be forgotten.  With so many things going on and managing the day to day sometimes our blogs end up dead-last on our 'to-do list'.  In comes the V-L-O-G!  A vlog is just a video blog, but with today's technology it has become so much more.  Now you can vlog on the go and just about anywhere you have an internet connect or you can save you videos and upload them later - totally up to you and definitely an option.

Traditional blogs are fun and allow for you to share some passionate ideas, inspiration and words of advice from all over the world!  Take it from me, bloggin' and vloggin' are interchangeable because now you can do both in one site and really brand it in a cool way.

In all, you do not have to choose between one or the other, you can have both, maintain both but you have to be committed and focused on your end goal; which is...

Can I start my own web design business w/ little or no start-up cost? #emily

Can I start my own web design business w/ little or no start-up cost? #emily

This article was requested by Emily one of my old college buddies:

"Monica,

Could you point me in the right direction, I'm getting a lot of mixed reviews.  Can I start my own web design agency with little or no start-up?  How did you do it?

Thanks,
Emily"

First off, I did not start my own agency in a literal sense; I often refer to The Talently as an agency but I am just a freelance designer who is good at what I do.  I also happen to be married to programmer and eCommerce guru; so you can say I have an advantage and did I mention my brother is a Graphic Designer... ??

Anywho - Starting an agency is like starting a business there are going to be some upfront cost and it's better to invest the money now instead of paying for it in the future.  Cutting corners never works when it comes to small business, so with that in mind let's talk about freelancing.

Freelancing is easier to get into because you can maintain a full-time job and moonlight as a freelancer in the evenings and weekends.  You can choose what projects you take on, control your working environment and schedule. It takes commitment and some cost, even if it's just your time and energy for every input there is an output. Once you develop and maintain a steady client base a freelancer you can start thinking about start an agency.  Consider only working a part-time job so you can dedicate more time to your agency and this is where cost comes into play.  As a freelancer you made minimal investments like software and subscriptions but most of those cost were deferred to clients thru your billing structure. Now you are investing your time and resources to get this thing off the ground and the cost is the risk that you will not financially pull thru and according to statistic you have an uphill battle.

So the answer to the question is yes; you can start freelancing at little cost to prepare you to launch your agency.  Freelancing, in my eyes, is the start of starting your agency.  You have to develop a client base, generating income and have the capabilities to scale your business for success.  There are licensing and IRS requirements once established and earning a certain amount per year, so be sure to check your local SBA.

Interns, interns, interns

Hiring interns makes things easy and less expensive.  A non-paid intern can gain the experience and build up their portfolio so it is a mutually beneficial partnership. Often times agencies hire their interns because they learn the business and are easily molded into the perfect employee and are eager to learn!

So what other cost to consider once you cross all the legal and tax paperwork?  Well, will you rent an office or can you work out of your home? Do you have contracts and service agreements made out? Have they been reviewed by an attorney?  Do you have a set pricing structure i.e. charge by the hour, by project, or subscription fees?

Wrapping up

I started off freelancing and still am! I make enough money to continue doing what I love and maybe one day I will venture into the bug leagues but for now I am happily running my website and blog support my clientele as it is today.  Maybe in a few days, weeks or years an agency is on the horizon but for now, I'll stick to enjoying the day to day and questioning the box's existence.

Paypal Buttons vs. eCommerce website

Paypal Buttons vs. eCommerce website

Totally up to your business needs. Don't get me wrong, an eCommerce website is the way to go if the majority of your sales happen online and you sell thousands of dollars worth of inventory in a given month.  So let's start with some basics - eCommerce takes time and money, incorporating PayPal buttons to your site is fast and easy.

The main thing to focus on is how much money you are generating. PayPal charges an overall percentage on all sales and they add up quickly.  Another disadvantage is your money not being available when you need it, although the PayPal debit card transfers money instantly - the majority of people prefer the money being deposited into their business checking accounts.  In addition, PayPal disputes generally land in the buyers favor regardless of the evidence you collect.

Buy Now Button Pros:

  • PayPal doesn’t have any ongoing fees or long term contracts which makes it convenient.
  • “Buy Now” buttons can be encoded to allow your customers to purchase an item with a fixed amount.
  • Buyers may purchase multiples of the same items.
  • PayPal will track inventory of these items if that is required.
  • PayPal has a simple refund process should you need to do that.
  • PayPal provides for the ability to have thank you pages and cancellation pages to which site visitors are routed after the successful purchase or at the cancellation of a purchase.
  • PayPal provides functionality to customize your purchase screen with your logo and colors.

Buy Now Button Cons:

  • “Buy Now” or a PayPal button doesn’t have shopping cart functionality, meaning customers cannot put an item in a virtual shopping basket and continue shopping.
  • Every time a new item must be added, you will either need to code a new PayPal button or call your web developer add a button. While not highly complex, it involves a few steps and it may be confusing to those who don’t use it regularly.
  • Consumers unfamiliar with the use of a PayPal button, may not understand that they may pay with credit cards, and are not required to have a PayPal account. You may need to explain the process or have a separate set of FAQs to help them. However, many companies now use these buttons so more are familiar with them.
How do you decide what you really need?

Easy. How much money are you generating per month on average? Current PayPal fees are at:

So take into consider they will add up quick. If you are generating just as much fees as income then it's time to consider eCommerce as a long-term solution. Also, put it into perspective that these fees are in lieu of the initial eCommerce website development cost, which can go upward of $10K~ along with any monthly subscriptions and maintenance fees.

In all, if you are making lots of money thru online shoppers  whatever financial solution you decide the sales will pay for any overhead cost.

So what's the verdict? PayPal for quick and easy set-up and monthly sales under $5K~ but if you have the budget and time generating over $5K~ per month, then eCommerce is the way to go.

Choosing a blog theme </> template

Choosing a blog theme template

******************************
When choosing a blog theme it is important to keep in mind it's functionality and purpose.  As I discovered, moods, minds and winds change with the seasons and so do our taste, style and blog themes!  Here are some quick tips when choose a blog them... Enjoy!
  1. Purpose  What is the purpose of your blog?  Sell products or services, redirecting traffic to your main website or physical business? Choose a design that encompasses the elements of your business' mission, vision and branding.
  2. Accessibility Let your blog interact with it's visitors. Call to action segments are proven reliable but other elements include visuals, promotions and enhance the user experience (UX).
  3. Structure Is your site map well organized, easy to navigate and user friendly?  Hand in hand with user experience and accessibility, the layout of your content must be strategically placed to catch the visitor's eye.
  4. Security This is important, and requirement for any site.  Many Web hosting companies have special servers to allow for secure order forms and contact pages. If you don't use a hosting company, you must implement Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) and associated certificates on your own. That requires getting a compliant server (most major servers are compliant) and applying to a certificate authority such as VeriSign.
  5. Profit The bottom line is the bottom line.  Your site must generate income to cover it's overhead; unless you are working with a free blog. Think of ways to help cover the overhead and still have fun writing and creating!

Do I need to know how to code to build my own website?

Do I need to know how to code to build my own website?

In general, no, nowadays creating a website with a site builder will satisfy your needs.  There are many sites out there that have drag and drop site building tools that require no coding or ftp at all!  Although, you are limited in terms of customization, you will be able to create a site that you envision.  A blog or simple store front can all be done in a few clicks, but require time and patience.  There is still a technical component when it comes to web design.  My site for instances, TheTalently, provides virtual admin and IT support, web development and design with graphic design and content writing services as well, was built with pure code; and it shows.  Point being, if you choose a site builder or run of the mill template which are cost saving alternatives to web development that will come across in the end product.

Web design and development is an art, and taking away the creativity behind the scenes limits it's potential, not only to generate income but it limits the relationship with potential customers and here's why:
  1. It seems generic and lacks character.  You are stuck with a template that might not necessarily reflect your brand.  I am not talking about logos or color pallets; I am talking about the impression or experience it leaves your visitors.  A generic site that doesn't stand out will not appeal to a large audience.  Sites that are unique and scream originality grab peoples attention and makes them want to know more.
  2. We are visual creatures.  Let's face it, when we shop online we are looking for things that attract or compliment us - in the same way we choose a lover or significant other.  If we like what we see, it intrigues us, but if it stands out from the rest, we gravitate toward it and that right there is proof enough, a good website requires design and development.
Although, most start-ups and small business require an online presence and might be limited on funds, in that case a site builder is perfect!  Usually your first website is trial and error.  Most start-ups and small business only keep their original website for less than 2 years.  They are still developing their brand, and their website is the secondary revenue generator - this is the case for restaurants, mom and pop shops, small agencies and so on.  So, spending half their marketing budget on web development wouldn't be a smart choice - a simple solution is their short-term goal.

What site builder sites do I recommend?

Wix
Easy dashboard and you can literally point, click and drag your way to an astonishing site.  If your budget allows, you can even get it built for you at a fraction of the price it would take for web development or the time it would take you to do it yourself if you have no web design knowledge at all.

Weebly
Talk about simple!  Their templates are more run of the mill but if you are completely clueless about web design or have little patience to tinker around with a site builder then this is the option for you.  You can literally get your site online in less than an hour.

Shopify
This is the option if you are selling products.  Although, Wix offers eCommerce they are more about aesthetics and the functionality with most of their eCommerce templates lacks the robustness needed for a do-it-yourselfer.

Blogger
Perfect if you want to set up a nice blog in 10 minutes or less.  You can google 'free blogger site templates' and turn up a treasure trove of results!  With a few clicks you can transform a boring blog into a multifaceted online presence that captures your readers attention with a beautifully designed template.

Decisionsdecisionsdecisions... But don't despair - The Talently is here!  We can help guide you through the process.  Free consultation, and we will tell you what is involved in each process - from site builder tips and tricks to the best deals on web design and development in the bay area.  Give us a call or text today: 415.855.0001.
